They ruled over parts of southeastern Mexico and northern Central America. This area includes the Yucatán Peninsula, modern day Guatemala and Belize, along with the western sections of modern day El Salvador and Honduras. In Mexico, the Maya Empire extended to Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. By 500 BC, the Mayans were creating large temple statues to represents their gods.
